deviceWISE: Device Connectivity

deviceWISE offers a large library of native device drivers that enable communication with many popular plant floor devices. The deviceWISE driver architecture has a pluggable model to allow new drivers to be developed and existing drivers improved with additional functionality over time.

Variable Enumeration

deviceWISE stands apart from its competition by leveraging its variable enumeration capabilities in addition to accessing the actual data. When you define a device in deviceWISE, you typically only provide an IP address and a port, no special information about what variables are available in the device needs to be provided to start using a device. If you look at the images below, you can see two sample variable models. deviceWISE was able to query both PLCs for their internal databases to present an accurate representation of the device.

Device Management

Managing your device connections has never been easier. Through the Workbench, you can easily manage all of your connections and see at a glance detailed information about each connection, as well as any error information about a specific connection. The Workbench also presents key statistics about time spent accessing the device, including the average time to read and write data to the PLC.

Unsolicited Messaging

One of the key features of the deviceWISE device manager is the ability to receive and process unsolicited messages sent from plant floor devices. In the case of a PLC, messages like Rockwell's "Set Single Attribute", or Omron's "SEND 090" message, you can configure an enterprise transaction to be sent when a message is received from a device.

In the case of RFID readers and vision systems, events are generated when RFID tags or barcodes are successfully decoded. This allows a true event based application to be written without the traditional polling based infrastructures required by most other applications.

OPC Connectivity

While deviceWISE has many native drivers available, there are thousands of devices available on the market. Due to its long history in the marketplace, there are many OPC servers that can connect to thousands of different devices. deviceWISE is able to leverage those connections by integrating data from other OPC servers into its variable space seamlessly. This enables customers who possibly already have invested in custom OPC servers for their device connections to use their existing investments to enable their deviceWISE connectivity.
