All deviceWISE enabled products come with an embedded SQL database. For customers who need a basic database for data logging or edge processing, the local database can eliminate a lot of the hassles associated with installing and configuring a full SQL database such as DB2 or Oracle.
Simple Data Collection
Many data collection applications do not require a high end enterprise database. For quick engineering analysis it is often easier to collect the data locally, and periodically export it to a CSV file for analysis in Microsoft Excel or the analysis tool of your choice.
Once exported, the CSV files can either be copied off of the deviceWISE node with the Workbench or the embedded FTP server. deviceWISE nodes are also able to transfer the files to another server via FTP automatically.
Optimized Data Collection
The local database in deviceWISE opens up new opportunities to optimize the raw data that is collected by the system. By using the edge processing capabilities of deviceWISE, decisions about what to do with the data can be made in real-time.
For example, data can be collected every 100 ms for an hour. At the top of every hour, a check can be performed to ensure that all data values were within a specified range. If all of the data is within range, then send a single notification to the enterprise noting that there were no errors during the hour. However, if the values are out of the specified range, then the entire hour's worth of data can be sent to the enterprise system for further analysis.
Enterprise Pre-Fetch
Another common use for the local database is to download a large amount of data from an enterprise application and then feed it to attached devices over time. Data can automatically be transferred from enterprise databases such as DB2 or Oracle to the local database to allow the device to cache a certain amount of work right on the deviceWISE module.
For applications that require data from the enterprise application during operation (such as some labeling or packaging applications), deviceWISE offers a way to keep hours or even days of that information in the deviceWISE node. With the ability to store hours or days worth of data directly in the deviceWISE module, it becomes possible to create applications that can run even if they lose connection to the enterprise applications.
