deviceWISE offers a wide range of OPC connectivity across many different platforms. Many of today's solutions use OPC servers to present the device layer in a normalized format, and enable higher level applications to access the plant data without writing costly custom drivers. Also, many SCADA applications use OPC clients to access data from OPC servers around the plant to process the data and pass it up to the MES or ERP systems.

OPC Server

deviceWISE solutions simplify applications by reducing the number of systems between devices and enterprise applications. By replacing a traditional OPC installation with deviceWISE, customers can use the native drivers built into deviceWISE to connect to devices, and send that data directly to enterprise applications within the same application. For systems (like SCADA or HMI applications) that still require an OPC connection, the deviceWISE OPC Server can be used to allow those systems to access data from devices connected to the deviceWISE node.

OPC Client

While deviceWISE has a comprehensive set of native device drivers for the most widely used devices on the plant floor, there are many devices that are not currently supported via a native driver. However, if that device has an OPC Server that can communicate with it, then deviceWISE can access the data by acting as an OPC client to communicate with the other OPC Server.

OPC UA

The next generation of OPC, dubbed UA (Unified Architecture), is nearing completion. OPC-UA is a major improvement on the traditional DCOM based OPC solutions. deviceWISE supports OPC-UA data access, alarms, conditions, and methods. Our focus is twofold: To enable embedded devices like PLCs, RFID readers, and other intelligent devices with direct OPC-UA support. At the same time, we want to leverage our vast experience developing UNIX based products to offer fully functional OPC-UA versions of deviceWISE on Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX.

OPC UA - Platforms

We have been working hard to ensure that OPC-UA will be available for all of the major operating systems used in manufacturing by the end of the year. We are currently targetting the following platforms for deviceWISE/OPC-UA support:

  • Windows
  • Linux
  • Solaris
  • AIX
  • HP-UX
  • VxWorks
